AN ADVENTURE DOG'S GEAR LIST

The world is full of endless gear options out there for both humans and four legged companions. I've compiled a list of tried tested and true gear that I use for Luna and myself on our backpacking and day hiking trips.

LUNA'S GEAR

Outward Hound Dog Backpack

Luna only carries her backpack if we are going on an overnight backpacking trip or longer. Backpacks are unnecessary for day hikes.

How much weight can my dog carry? The general rule of thumb is 10-12% of your dog's weight (Luna is 37 lbs and her backpack weights ~4 lbs). Of course this depends on the dog's fitness level and health. Always weigh their pack with a scale, don't guess! Anything over the weight limit should go into your own pack. Always consult a vet if you are unsure.

What do I pack in my dog's backpack? Luna's pack consists of her kibble needed for the trip, collapsible water bowl, and extra poop bags. Make sure that each side is equal weight so that the backpack stays even on their spine, and is comfortable for your dog.

Collar and Leash

Always always always keep a collar on your dog and have a leash easily acessible. Yes, even if the trail is off leash friendly. You never know if you need to restrain your dog from other animals in the wild. As good as you may think your dog's recall is, anything can happen in the wild and on trail.

Make sure that your dog's tags are up to date, in the worst case scenario that he runs away.

Unscented Poop Bags

Leave No Trace! Pick up your dog's poop, carry it with you on the trail, and pack it out with you. Not digging the thought of carrying poop around all weekend? Just put the poop into a scentproof bottle or bag, problem solved!

Why can't I just leave the poop bag on the side of the trail so I can pick it up on my way back?

Leave NO Trace means leave no trace. This is a sore subject among dog owners. Some people leave dog poop bags on the trail with the intention of throwing it away on the way out. While I can't speak for others, I know that I personally have been guilty of accidentally forgetting or even going another route back and not picking up the poop I left. I "make up" for it by picking up other poop bags I see, but regardless, this is unacceptable and is a big reason why many popular trails are not dog friendly.

Rex Specs Doggy Goggles

These nifty and super cool adventure goggles are meant to protect from your pooch from wind, sand, and snow. Just like we need sunglasses to protect ourselves from irritants and snow blindness, dogs "need" them too! (but mainly, they're cute AF).

There is training involved prior to using them so that your dog can get accustomed to wearing them (check out their website for more info).
